Angus is sent with his brother and sister to live with his caring but aged Grandmother and his hard, mysterious Grandfather. The old man tells them old Gaelic stories - haunting, funny, fearful stories: of bloody vengeance at the hands of a magician's child apprentice, of a Spaniard and a Gael ship-wrecked on a desolate island from which no man can escape, of a dreadful water-horse whose rider can never dismount. Stories across the great swathe of Gaelic history from time of the Viking Lords of the Isles through the tragedy of the Highland Clearances right up to the 21st century. When his Grandmother dies suddenly, Angus' belief in anything other than the cold reality of an uncaring world finally crumbles and he grows to hate his Grandfather and his stories. Years later, Angus has abandoned Skye and his Gaelic heritage and is pursuing a career in Glasgow as an accountant. His sister calls to tell him that his Grandfather has had a heart attack and is dying. He returns reluctantly to Skye only to to be kidnapped for 24 hours by his Grandfather.
